Commercial Refrigeration
You keep cold things cold when somebody's whole business depends on it. Grocery stores, restaurants, cold storage, hospitals holding blood and vaccines. When a walk-in fails at two in the morning, somebody is losing thousands of dollars an hour until you get there.
A day in it
- Store calls at six — walk-in freezer is climbing and the manager is watching product.
- Pull the panel, check the contactor, check for a restriction in the line.
- It's the TXV. Recover, replace, evacuate, recharge, watch the superheat come down.
- Manager stops worrying about his inventory. That's the job.
- Rest of the morning is scheduled maintenance across three stores.
- Coils cleaned, gaskets checked, logs written up.
- On call one week a month, and that week you carry the phone everywhere.

BLS does not break commercial refrigeration out on its own — it sits inside SOC 49-9021 with HVAC. The figures above are that combined occupation; refrigeration-specific pay generally runs higher.
How you get in
- —Start in HVAC, then specialize. Almost nobody enters refrigeration first.
- —EPA 608 Type II and Universal are the certifications that matter here.
- —Supermarket chains and food service companies hire and train directly.
- —The Mustard Seed covers tuition, certification, and tools.
What you need before you start
- —Emergency work is the job. Nights and weekends come with it.
- —Cold. You will spend real time inside freezers.
- —Precision — refrigeration is less forgiving than comfort cooling.
